Red Sox Roll Phillies 8-0 on Opening Day

The Boston Red Sox (1-0) started their season off on the right foot by shutting out the (0-1) Philadelphia Phillies 8-0 in Philadelphia on Monday afternoon.

Dominant Offense

Dustin Pedroia got the Sox off to a fast start when he hit a home run in the first inning off of Cole Hamels to put the Red Sox up 1-0.

Mookie Betts kept the Sox offense rolling in the third when he drilled a home run to give the Red Sox a 2-0 lead.

Boston would lead 4-0 heading into the top of the ninth when newcomer, Hanley Ramirez, hit his second home run of the game, this one a grand slam to break the game wide open, putting the Red Sox up 8-0.  

Pitching

Clay Buchholz picked up the win, pitching seven innings, striking out nine batters and only giving up three hits on 94 pitches. 

Next game

The Red Sox will have a day off on Tuesday, April 7 and return to action on Wednesday night, April 8 when they will play the second  game of their three game series with the Phillies. 

Rick Porcello will make his first start with the Red Sox  and will face Aaron Harang of the Phillies. 

First pitch is set for 7 p.m.
