PC Grinds Out 69-59 Win Over Fairleigh Dickinson

Nate Watson grabbed seven rebounds and had 10 points
The Providence College Friars grinded out a 69-59 win over the Fairleigh Dickinson Knights on Tuesday night the Dunkin’ Donuts Center, however, head coach Ed Cooley was not celebrating.

“With all due respect to the teams we play, it’s not the Big East. I’m not trying to compete against the LIUs and whoever else we play. We have to play high major teams, night in and night out and that is what we are building toward. I’m just happy we win, now we have to learn how to compete at an elite level and that’s not what we are doing right now."

Cooley continued, "I give all teams respect that come in here and play, but if we are trying to see how good we are against teams we supposed to beat, then I'm in the wrong seat. That's just the god's honest truth."

The win improves the Friars to 5-2 on the season, while Fairleigh Dickinson drops to 3-3.

"We still have our work cut out for us defensively. I thought we played really well defensively in the first half, but we didn't capitalize on layups, free throws. We played a lot of guys, just trying to get some young guys game experience. Just defensively we have a long way to go," Cooley said.

Friars Pull Away in 2nd

After leading by 11 at the half, PC saw their lead go down to eight, 40-32, with 13:58 to play in the game.

Alpha Diallo would then score six straight points for the Friars to push their lead to 46-32 with 11:42 to play in the game.

Diallo led the Friars with 20 points on 8 of 14 shooting from the field. It is his third 20 point game this season.

The Knights would get as close as nine, 49-40, before Providence would then go on a 7-0 run capped off by a Makai Ashton-Langford jump shot to take a 56-40 lead with 6:07 to play.

Ashton-Langford played 21 minutes in the game after not seeing action against Iona, and playing nine minutes against Michigan.

He finished with six points, three assists, and one rebound.

"I thought he had a couple of better days in practice. He made a big shot for us, big layups, big assists. I was really proud of how he responded to not playing the last game. Like I always tell our guys, 'you got to be ready,' just because it's Christmas doesn't mean we are going to give you a gift. When you produce in practice and you do what you're are supposed to do, you will be rewarded," said Cooley.

The Knights would not get closer than 10 points the rest of the way as PC would go on to win 69-59.

Maliek White did not play in the game due to sickness, Cooley confirmed after the game.
