Patriots Select 4 Players on Day 2 of NFL Draft

The New England Patriots selected four players on day two of the 2019 NFL Draft on Friday night in Nashville, Tennessee.

The four players the Patriots drafted include cornerback Joejuan Williams, defensive end Chase Winovich, running back Damien Harris and offensive lineman Yodney Cajuste.

“As it relates to tonight, obviously a lot of movement. Kind of moved up and down, side to side on the board. Where we ended up is picking four, what we think, are quality football players that have played against good competition and have been productive at a family consistent level,” said Patriots Director of Player Personnel Nick Canario in his post-draft press conference.

The Patriots picks are as follows:

Round 2, Pick 45 Overall

After trading picks 56 and 101 to the LA Rams for the 45th pick overall, the Patriots chose Vanderbilt cornerback Joejuan Williams.

“He is a tremendously impressive kid, very mature. I would say he is a great person, which is important. It says a lot about him and the things that he has endured in his life. As a player, he has some unique attributes that not a lot of players in that position have, how that translates into our system, we will find out,” said Caserio.

Williams is listed at 6’3”, 208 pounds.

Last season at Vanderbilt, he recorded four interceptions and 61 tackles.

Round 3, Pick 77 Overall

With the 77th overall pick in the draft, New England took Michigan defensive end Chase Winovich.

“He has been productive rushing the passer, he has a good motor, he is a pretty instinctive guy, good with his hands and pretty good technique,” said Caserio.

Winovich is listed as 6’3” 255 pounds.

With the Wolverines in 2018, Winovich recorded five sacks and 59 tackles, 15.5 of them were for a loss.

Round 3, Pick 87 Overall

At the 87th pick in the draft, the Patriots took Alabama running back Damien Harris.

With Alabama in 2018, Harris recorded 876 yards and nine touchdowns out of the backfield.

“He falls into the good football player category that has been consistently productive over the course of however many years. Everyone knows what we think of the Alabama program, the mutual respect that Bill and Nick have for each other, but this is a player that over the course of the last three years has averaged 1,000 yards in the SEC and they have a lot of good backs,” said Caserio.

He also tallied 204 receiving yards.

Harris joins a running back depth chart that consists of Sony Michael, Rex Burkhead, Brandon Bolden and James White.

Round 3, Pick 101 Overall

With the 101st pick in the draft, New England took West Virginia offensive lineman Yodney Cajuste.

“He has primarily played left tackle in a passing system. He is a daily athletic kid who was a three-year starter,” said Caserio.

Cajuste started all four years at West Virginia, but dealt with knee injuries in both 2015 and 2016. However, he has since been healthy.

According to Pro Football Focus, Cajuste allowed just 12 pressers last season.

He is listed at 6’5”, 312 pounds.

Upcoming Picks

The final four rounds of the draft will take place on Saturday.

New England has three picks in round four and then do not pick until round seven.

The Patriots have four picks in round seven of the draft.
