The Patriots have suspended defensive lineman Michael Bennett one week for conduct detrimental to the team, according to a statement Bennett provided to ESPN.

“On Friday, I had a philosophical disagreement with my position coach that has led to my suspension. I apologize to my teammates for any distraction this may have caused,” Bennett said in a statement.

Bret Bielema is the Patriots defensive line coach.

Bennett’s suspension means that he will miss New England’s week seven game in New York against the Jets on Monday Night Football.

Bennett was not at practice on Tuesday.

As GoLocalProv has pointed out in recent weeks, Bennet’s snap count and percentage have been on a gradual decline since week one of the season.

The decline continued last week against the Giants where Bennett played just 22% of defensive snaps (11 total snaps) in the game.

Here is a look at Bennett’s snaps through the first six weeks:

  • Week 1 -  37 snaps, (55% of defensive snaps)
  • Week 2 - 25 snaps, (40% of defensive snaps)
  • Week 3 - 19 snaps (38% of defensive snaps)
  • Week 4 - 24 snaps (30% of defensive snaps)
  • Week 5 - 15 snaps ( 25% of defensive snaps)
  • Week 6 - 11 snaps (22 % of defensive snaps)

In his limited snaps, Bennett has 2.5 sacks and four solo tackles on the year.

He also has four quarterback hits.

Bennett signed a two-year, $16,750,000 contract with the Patriots in the offseason and has a cap hit of $6.5 million this season.
