Political Profile: Michael Carreiro, Candidate for State Senate in District 29
Saturday, September 10, 2022
Michael Carreiro is a Democrat running for State Senate in District 29. Here's what he has to say.
1. What do you think is the biggest political issue this campaign season in Rhode Island?
Housing affordability is crippling Our State’s future. Wages have not kept up with the increased home prices, and if this trend continues many families won’t have the opportunity to call their Rhode Island home. We can address Rhode Island’s housing crisis by making it easier to build new homes, expanding down payment assistance programs for first-time homebuyers, and investing in workforce housing.

2. What do we need to do to improve Rhode Island's economy?
We need to build economic security for seniors and those living on a fixed income. Recently, the state eliminated taxes on military pensions and raised the state income tax exemption for pensions to $20,000. That is a strong step forward, but Rhode Island is only one of handful of states that taxes any portion of pensions and Social Security. This puts us at a competitive disadvantage. If elected, I will fight for seniors by advocating for the elimination of all income taxes on social security and pension income.
3. What is the greatest challenge facing Rhode Island as a state?
One thing I am concerned about is the structural conditions of Warwick’s high schools. I strongly support the $350 million city bond to fund a new Pilgrim High School and renovate Tollgate High School. The state will reimburse the city for a large portion of the bond. My son attends Warwick Public Schools and I truly believe the best investment we can make as a society is an investment in all of our children. The best way to prepare our students for the jobs of tomorrow is to empower them to learn and thrive in 21st Century high schools. I am hopeful that in addition to considering my candidacy, you will also consider supporting the school bond. Our future depends on it.
4. Why are you running for office? What makes you uniquely qualified?
I never thought I would run for public office, but our community deserves someone who knows how great Warwick can be and will fight for our city every day at the State House. I am a working-class candidate that wants to bring the voice of the working-class people to the State.
As a Warwick firefighter, I have fought fires, responded to rescue calls, and worked to keep our community safe from COVID-19. I love serving our community, and I sincerely believe that working for the Warwick Fire Department has given me the motivation and drive to run for Rhode Island State Senate.
5. Who is your inspiration?
My Inspiration is my father Edmundo. He worked the line at several textile and manufacturing plants. After his plant closed in Pawtucket, he commuted to Connecticut so he could keep putting food on the table for our family. He worked long hours, to make ends meet through tight family budgets, and most importantly, taught me the value of hard work.
Bio
This campaign was not something that I have planned extensively for and I am not a career politician or paid political operative. I am just Mike, a Warwick firefighter who wants to fight for you and our city in the State Senate.
We must protect the rights of every American. This means individuals of all races, ethnicities, genders, and orientations. One of the things that makes our country strong is freedom of expression, and it comes in many forms.
