Rhode Island Republican Party Chairman Joe Powers — along with a half dozen GOP city and town chairs — blasted Democratic leadership for the failure of the Washington Bridge nearly 5 months after its closure, at a press conference on Tuesday.

Calling out Rhode Island Democratic leadership, Powers urged business owners — and Governor Dan McKee — to attend a public forum in East Providence next week for “transparency,”

“We don’t stand here as Chairmen of the Republican Party. We stand here as constituents of the state of Rhode Island who are fed up. We’re sick and tired of being sick and tired,” said Powers, noting they were standing “in the shadow of yet another display of poor decision-making by Democratic leadership, the McKee Washington Bridge Debacle.”

“It’s the culmination of years of inadequate leadership the Rhode Islanders have endured. This so-called surprise unveiled in December was no surprise at all,” said Powers. “How did Rhode Island DOT Director Peter Alviti not know about this? How did he not take action to protect Rhode Islanders?”

“The Democrats in leadership have either shown incompetence or irresponsibility and it’s time that they’re held accountable,” he added.

Community Forum Announced

“Businesses are losing significant portions of their revenue since December. Today marks the 148th day of the shutdown from the McKee administration, with no concrete plan. Rhode Islanders demand answers. Rhode Islanders demand transparency,” said Powers.

“Governor McKee, the time for excuses are over. We’re inviting you to a Town Hall meeting to face the constituents who have suffered the most — and provide real answers to them. I urge all of Rhode Island and especially East Bay constituents to attend our meeting on May 13 at 6:30 PM at the Riviera Restaurant in East Providence,” he said.
