Korean Conflict Veteran Andrew A. Masse Dies at 92

Andrew A. Masse, 92, passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by his loving family, on October 11, 2022. Andrew was born on February 5, 1930 in Coventry, RI, a son of the late Alfred and Dora (Robidoux) Massey. He leaves his devoted and loving wife of 68 years Bertha (Collard) Masse, they just renewed their wedding vows by Fr. Paul Lemoi.

He also leaves his two loving and protective daughters Suzanne Masse Toohey (husband, Edward of Scituate, RI) and Jacqueline Masse Conway (husband, Edward of Cranston, RI), four grandchildren: Shaylin, Sean, Christin, and Jennifer Conway; sister Lorraine Rajotte, and brother-in-laws Paul Laferriere, Leo (wife, Maria Collard), and Paul (wife Melanie Collard), as well as many nieces and nephews.
Andrew was predeceased by his siblings Roland Masse, Lionel Masse, Alfred Masse, Raymond Masse, Irene Carroll, and Claire Laferriere, and brother-in-law Donat Collard and his wife Lucille. He lived most of his life in Pawtuxet Valley until moving to Cranston 16 years ago.
He served in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict from 1951-1953. Andrew started working at the age of 14 in a butcher shop in the Phenix Village; he trained himself by book with the help of the shop owner, Mr. Thibeault. Andrew later went to work at Star Market full time for many years until his first retirement. He started working part-time at Dave’s Market, where he was also on their golf league, until the age of 87. He was the oldest golfer in the league. He made many friendships along the way and continued those friendships by meeting once a month at the Atwood Grill restaurant with fellow retirees, or going to see the Boston Red Sox at Yankee Stadium.
Andrew was an avid golfer. He enjoyed taking trips to Myrtle Beach with is brother-in-law Donat, attending Red Sox, Paw Sox, and Providence Bruins games, and Nascar racing with his daughters and son-in-laws. In his earlier years, he enjoyed hunting and fishing, and was on a bowling league at Mac’s Bowlaway in West Warwick. Andrew was also a long time member of the West Warwick Lodge of Elks # 1697 and he was "Elk of the Year" and was known by the name of "Ripper".
Andrew was a kind, patient, loving, and respected man by all who knew him. He leaves many friends and extended family. He lived by his faith which he instilled to his daughters. Every year they would ask him for his Blessings for another year.
A visitation will be held on Wednesday, October 19, 2022 from 8:30 to 10:30 am in the Potvin-Quinn Funeral Home, 45 Curson Street, West Warwick. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 am in the Our Lady of Good Counsel Church, 60 Pleasant Street, West Warwick. Burial with military honors will follow in the Notre Dame Cemetery in West Warwick.
Special thanks to the VNA nurses, Kevin, Liz, Christy, Jillian, and Lorraine and to Susie the chaplain. They were all exceptional for their compassion and care that they gave to Andrew.
