In all of 2019, there were thirteen homicides in the city; in 2018, there were eleven.

Homicide Details

"Last night we got a call to Gallup Street  — a report of a shooting," said Providence Police Major David Lapatin. "A few minutes later we were called by Rhode Island Hospital that a victim was brought there."

"Dante Mann, age 27, was dead on arrival," said Lapatin.

" At Gallup Street there was a scene. There seems to be several shots fired," said Lapatin, of a group of people at the shooting location. "It looks like they were doing what we believe was a video — making a video — and a couple of cars came by and shots rang out. Prior to that, there might have been some altercation. We’re looking into now that could have been the reason."

Lapatin said that police are still reviewing evidence, including gathering video and talking with witnesses.

Safety in Focus

While Providence recently saw a nine-year-old girl kidnapped and sexually assaulted by a stranger, ATVs and dirt bikes running rampant -- illegally on city streets -- and numerous stabbings and shootings, including a mother shot in her house while holding her newborn,  Lapatin said he believes the city is still "safe."

"We've have had an uptick [in violence] we know that," said Lapatin. "We’re doing our best on the street. We have a lot of people on the street, intelligence gathered, to try and try and quell this."

"We know one person purchased 80 something guns, [they're on the streets], and we’re trying to get them back," he said. "Although we’re making headway, we’re not going as fast as we’d like to go, but we can’t violate people’s rights."

"The weather is a factor. If it’s freezing cold, kids aren’t going to be out there making videos on the street," said Lapatin. "We’re doing the best we can and I think we’re making a lot of progress. Let’s hope we can get this under control very shortly."

Lapatin said he meant specifically getting control of the weapons.

"I’m not saying it’s out of control. It’s not," said Lapatin. "The city is still a very safe place. Most of the shootings have targets. What we worry about is stray bullets. We also worry about the targets of course."
