VIDEO: Langevin and Cicilline Reject Trump’s Proposal on Ending the Shutdown
Sunday, January 20, 2019
On Saturday night, President Donald Trump offered a new plan to end the government shutdown. Trump in a White House video statement offered temporary protection from deportations for some undocumented immigrants in exchange for $5.7 billion in wall funding.
Both RI Congressman had harsh words for President Donald Trump’s most recent proposal aimed at ending the nearly one-month federal government shutdown.
GET THE LATEST BREAKING NEWS HERE -- SIGN UP FOR GOLOCAL FREE DAILY EBLASTRI’s Jim Langevin said, “I am ready and willing to work with the President and my Congressional colleagues on both sides of the aisle to pass comprehensive immigration reform that strengthens and improves our border security, but before we do so the President must reopen the federal government immediately. It’s time we stop talking past each other and find real solutions to end this shutdown that has caused serious harm to federal workers and the American public.”
And, Democratic Policy and Communications Committee (DPCC) Chair David N. Cicilline (RI-01) said in a statement:
“More than four weeks into the longest government shutdown in American history, the President is still doing nothing to end it. Taken individually, none of the proposals he discussed today would even pass the House. Taken together, they are completely unacceptable. The only way out of this mess is for the President to sign the bills that the House passed over the last two weeks – bills that the Senate passed unanimously before the shutdown began.”
“The President has said he would be ‘proud’ to shut down the federal government. Today, thousands of TSA employees, air traffic controllers, FBI agents, and other working people are being forced to work without the guarantee of a paycheck. That is not fair. It is wrong. The President needs to recognize the harm he has already done to our country and end this stupid shutdown.”
