Police received a call Sunday night shortly after 9 p.m. that there was a man in possession of a gun in the 7-Eleven at Kennedy Plaza.

Officers responded to the scene, where witnesses at the 7-Eleven described the individual, who police then located standing with two other men on Weybosset Street.

At that time, one of the other men began to run away, and an officer began to pursue him on foot.

According to police, as the officer continued to search for the fleeing individual, that suspect jumped out from a hiding spot behind a building and began attacking the officer on Union Street, in front of the restaurant Oberlin.

That officer broadcast, "He's got my gun, he’s got my gun" over his radio.

Additional officers responded to the scene, where the suspect was found on top of the officer and punching him.

The suspect reportedly resisted arrest, and was tased and detained.

The officer suffered injuries that required treatment at Rhode Island Hospital.

Police said that the suspect at the time of arrest was found to be in possession of a realistic-looking BB gun replica.

Police are currently investigating.
