The Narragansett Bay Commission (NBC) announced on Friday that the agency had been hit by a cyberattack.

It is just the latest in a long line of Rhode Island governmental agencies and not-for-profits hit.

Previously, GoLocal has reported about attacks on East Greenwich,  a vendor of the City of Providence, Care New England, and Brown University, to name a few.

"Last week, the Narragansett Bay Commission identified a cybersecurity incident that involved the encryption of data on certain computers and systems in its network.  In response, Narragansett Bay Commission immediately initiated its incident response plan, contacted law enforcement, and launched an investigation. Narragansett Bay Commission’s sewage services were not impacted by this incident and there has been no disruption to wastewater collection and treatment services," said the agency in a statement.

"Narragansett Bay Commission is working quickly to address this incident and restore operations on the systems involved, and its investigation of this incident is still ongoing. If it is determined that anyone’s personal information was potentially subject to unauthorized access or acquisition in connection with this incident, Narragansett Bay Commission will promptly provide notice to those individuals in accordance with applicable law.  Notably, Narragansett Bay Commission does not store payment information or Social Security numbers for any of its customers on its systems," said NBC.

National Problem

Roll Call reports, "House appropriators in June finished marking up a dozen spending bills for fiscal 2023 that would altogether provide at least $15.6 billion for cybersecurity efforts across federal departments and agencies.  The largest chunk of cybersecurity spending, $11.2 billion, would go to the Defense Department, followed by $2.9 billion for the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency, or CISA."

"To help prevent a similar incident from occurring in the future, Narragansett Bay Commission is implementing additional measures to enhance the security of its network and we will continue to train its employees concerning data security," adds NBC.
