The historic Castle Hill Inn was hit by fire on Thursday evening just before 10:00 PM.

UPDATED: Crews and dumpsters are onsite on Friday morning. Newport Restaurant Group has not issued any updates on the extent of the damage.

Newport fire and police responded. Crew have been on site throughout and into the early morning hours.

 

The extent of the damage is not known.

 

"Earlier tonight a fire broke out at Castle Hill Inn. All guests and staff were evacuated safely. We are incredibly thankful to first responders who are on property actively working to put the fire out."

Award Winning:

In 2025, it added to the awards it has received. "The AAA Diamond Program adds two new properties to its prestigious Five Diamonds list to close out the year: Yaamava’ Resort and Casino at San Manuel in Highland, California and Aurelia at Castle Hill in Newport, Rhode Island," announced AAA.

 

History:

The seaside home was commissioned by local marine biologist and naturalist Alexander Agassiz of Harvard University. It was used by the U.S.

During WWII, the mansion served as a base for naval officers. Post-war, it transitioned into a hotel for the elite.

Famous guests included Grace Kelly, who often stayed there in the 1950s, as well as Thornton Wilder.
