Aaron Regunberg announced that if he were a member of Congress, he would have voted against the debt ceiling legislation.

He lives in Regunworld. The often college student, protester, and political candidate lives in a special place. Regunworld is bankrolled with trust fund dollars.

Regunberg has spent much of his adult life attending Ivy League colleges, running for office, and protesting. Oh, it is a beautiful life — College Hill and Cambridge are beautiful this time of year, all seasons, and all years. They are idyllic.

He lives in Regunworld.

His position on the debt ceiling stood out — separating him from the others in the gaggle of nearly 20 announced Democrats now vying for the vacant first congressional seat.

And, Regunberg’s hypothetical vote would have placed him voting in concert with the likes of Republicans like Paul Gosar of Arizona, Matt Gaetz of Florida, and George Santos of New York.

On GoLocal LIVE on Friday, the chair of the political science department at the University of Virginia, Jennifer Lawless, said Regunberg’s position on the debt ceiling compromise package is “irresponsible.”

“I think he's trying to differentiate himself and when asked questions, he can then highlight all of the things that he would like to see progressive spending on and not cut, but at the end of the day, it demonstrates a complete unfamiliarity with the way the budget process works,” said Lawless.

“With the fact that the federal government needs to pay its own bills and that the United States cannot default, I think it's an irresponsible position,” said Lawless.

Lawless is no rookie; she ran for Congress in Rhode Island in the Democratic primary in 2006 — she lost to James Langevin 60% to 40%. At the time, she was a professor at Brown University. She appears on MSNBC and is often quoted in the New York Times and Politico.

Lawless is no one’s fool. An expert with a liberal Democratic bent, yes, a fool, no.

After Lawless’ comments, Regunberg emailed to GoLocal that his vote would have been just like some other progressives in Congress.

And, just like some other extremists on the right too, as some in both parties decided to “protest” vote. Real adults had to vote for the debt ceiling package. Members had to vote to keep the country from defaulting and falling into economic chaos.

Regunberg fired back one more time, “No, and obviously, the Dems who voted for the deal don’t share McCarthy and Scalise’s values. But to say my position is irresponsible is to say all those folks I mentioned are irresponsible. Which is a valid argument for Lawless or you to make. But personally, I feel confident in the responsibility of that group.”

In Regunworld, there is no need to vote to stop an economic catastrophe. You can vote with the fun protesters. You can vote with AOC and George Santos.

After all, it's not reality. It's Regunworld.
