Could “Elvis” Star Austin Butler’s Next Movie Be Filmed in RI? “We’re in Pursuit,” Says Feinberg

Austin Butler, who was Oscar-nominated this year for playing Elvis, has a new role — crime boss Danny Ryan in Don Winslow’s “City of Fire.”
Deadline announced the casting this week for Winslow’s novel about the feuding Moretti and Murphy crime families, set in Providence in the 1980s and 1990s.
Steve Feinberg with the Rhode Island Film and Television Office told GoLocal that while the film was just announced, the state will work to try and get the movie shot locally.

This week, GoLocal also first reported that “Good Burger 2” is slated to be filmed in Rhode Island, with details being finalized with Paramount Pictures.

“In his first star role set since his Oscar-nominated turn as Elvis Presley, Austin Butler will star in City on Fire, an adaptation of Don Winslow’s novel from Sony 3000 Pictures. This will be Butler’s first film as producer, alongside David Heyman and Shane Salerno. The studio has made this a high priority and will be meeting with writers and filmmakers immediately,” reported Deadline.

"The trilogy focuses on two criminal empires — one Irish, the other Italian — that control all of New England. A modern-day Helen of Troy event tears them apart and starts a brutal war. Butler will play the main character, Danny Ryan, forced to grow from a street soldier into a ruthless leader to protect his friends, his family and the home he loves. Fighting the Mafia, the local cops and the feds, Danny intends to build a dynasty or die trying. 3000 Pictures exec Drew Reed was instrumental in tracking the series, and Elizabeth Gabler and Marisa Paiva are overseeing for the studio."

Winslow’s latest novel, “City of Dreams,” comes out on April 18.
A Rhode Island native, Winslow grew up in Perryville in South Kingstown.
