Timeline of Controversy
Drescher had courted controversy in 2020, when in the wake of George Floyd’s murder and protests, he said the donut shop would no longer offering military or police discounts.
Rhode Island State Representative and retired Navy officer Camille Vella-Wilkinson called for a boycott of Allie’s Donuts.
Then, in August, he asked for people to bring their donuts — to the police.
As GoLocal wrote in August 2020, “In 2016, Allie’s Donuts was landing on national lists of the best donuts in America. Today, it is a bakery that has flipped political positions and now offended both critics of the police and the defenders.”
Now, Drescher is stepping down.
Latest Allie’s Announcement
Drescher, now the former COO owner-operator of Allie's, shared the following this week.
As of today, I am no longer COO of Allie’s Donuts.
Due to mostly physical, and some professional reasons, I am unable to perform my responsibilities to our company standard any longer. It was an excruciating decision to make, but I felt it better for those still involved with my family’s business that I was no longer a decision maker in the day-to-day operations. 2021 was increasingly difficult for me, and I apologize for letting you all down.
I’m not completely separating myself from the business, and will still have a small ownership stake, but I will no longer be representing the business via social media advertising, nor will I be involved in the organization of processes & strategy.
As my last effort in this capacity, I will say that the business is still the #1 donut manufacturer in Rhode Island, and our loyal friends & customers are the best group of fans we have ever had.
Thank you for your support over the last few years, and please continue to support Allie’s after I am long gone!
