Salloway discussed Rhode Island's involvement in the new POINTER trials -- and how Rhode Island is just one of five locations in the country where the latest Alzheimer's research is currently taking place.
"It’s testing whether a healthy lifestyle can protect memory in people at risk for Alzheimer’s," said Salloway, of the news trials being done in conjunction with the Alzheimer's Association.
"We’re excited that Rhode Island has been selected as one of the five sites with the only center in the Northeast to participate," he said. "It’s a real community partnership here to fight Alzheimer’s in a new way with healthy lifestyle."
"This is a major undertaking -- because there are so few sites, we’re being asked to recruit 400 people. So we’re going to have screen thousands of people," he said
"So we encourage Rhode Islanders 60 - 79, who have normal memory — we all have memory trouble in this age group — but are basically functioning OK -- who have an increased risk for Alzheimer’s based on family history," he said. "[Or if] they have high blood pressure or diabetes or high cholesterol, they’re not exercising more than 3 times a week, they’re eating an American type of diet — not a Mediterranean type of diet — all of those people may be eligible to participate."
Salloway said if people are interested, they can call 401-POINTER or go to Butler.org/pointer to sign up.
Drug Developments
In November, Salloway joined GoLocal LIVE to discuss a potentially breakthrough Biogen drug -- and on Wednesday, Biogen announced they completed the submission to the Food and Drug Administration for their experimental Alzheimer's disease drug.
"It’s really a milestone achievement. A lot of Rhode Islanders contributed to this — I’m really so proud of them," said Salloway.
"I call Alzheimer’s an epidemic within a pandemic. We need as much attention to Alzheimer’s as we do to COVID," he said. "If we can put that same zeal that we’re using to try and find a vaccine for COVID for breakthroughs for Alzheimer’s I think we’re really going to make some progress."
About Salloway — And Alzheimer’s Association
Salloway is a leading Alzheimer's researcher in America, and recent investments made at Brown University, including a $100 million gift for its brain science institute from alumnus Robert and Nancy Carney, are part of the efforts to quicken the pace of scientific discovery and help find cures for diseases such as ALS and Alzheimer's.
Approximately 5.5 million Americans suffer from Alzheimer's and of these, around 5.3 million are 65 and older, and 200,000 are younger and suffer from early-onset Alzheimer's disease. It is estimated that about two-thirds of Americans with Alzheimer's disease are women.
The Alzheimer’s Association is the leading voluntary health organization in Alzheimer’s research, care and support. Its mission is to eliminate Alzheimer’s disease through advancement of research, to provide and enhance care and support for all affected, and to reduce the risk of dementia through the promotion of brain health.
