Rhode Island Governor Gina Raimondo announced Monday the two state beaches that will be allowed to reopen on Memorial Day — “in a very limited way.”

“On Memorial Day, we will be reopening East Matunuck and Scarborough [beaches],” said Raimondo during the state’s daily weekday press briefing at the Vets Auditorium.

“The number of parking spots will be significantly limited — DEM is still working on exact regulations,” she said.

“The bathrooms and shower rooms will be closed, concessions will be closed, no lifeguards...on the flip side, you will not have to pay,” said Raimondo, who noted that the openings will be in a “very limited way.”

"It is our hope in phase two all the beaches will be open," she said.

Religious Gatherings

“Houses of worship present particular risks - hymnals, lining up in communion line, lots of folks who are older, sick, and frail. People are still worshiping, and many folks are getting creative…[but] virtual celebrations are clearly not the same thing,” said Raimondo. “I’m anxious to get back into our houses of worship.”

“I have decided we’ll target beginning in-person faith services the weekend of May 30th — between now and then we’ll work through the exact guidelines around the capacity allowed in any one building at one time, holy community, particular clearing,” said Raimondo. “It’s going to take some time to get ready, and we recognize that.”
