Moving Bristol 4th of July Concert Series to RWU Draws Strong Opposition

Earlier this week, it was announced that tradition was being broken in Bristol — breaking 4th of July traditions is not popular in the historic town.

Independence Park has historically been the host of the beloved Bristol 4th of July Concert Series. However, for 2025, the Bristol 4th of July Committee has decided to relocate this tradition to Roger Williams University.

The related parade was founded in 1785 and is considered the oldest Independence Day celebration in the United States of America.

Now, Save Bristol 4th, a coalition of Bristol residents, has banded together to restore the Bristol 4th of July Concert Series to Independence Park after a decision by the Bristol 4th of July Committee to move the event series to Roger Williams University.

The new group is Save Bristol 4th.

“Our petition that launched last [Friday] night has gained over 500 signatures and counting; it can be found at savebristol4th.com. The response has been overwhelming, and the residents of Bristol are making a clear statement that this decision must be reconsidered to preserve the community-focused nature of this cherished event,” said the group in an announcement.

 

The group said in a statement:

This relocation away from downtown and to an area only accessible by vehicles breaks down the community-centered nature of this event. Further, our local businesses rely on the crowds this event series attracts. The concerts traditionally bring in thousands of people, this vast audience supports local businesses, increasing tax revenue during this period. By restoring the Bristol 4th of July Concert Series to its original location at Independence Park, we not only uphold a cherished community tradition but also support local businesses that count on the influx of visitors this event brings. We urge the Committee to consider the economic ramifications and the cultural significance of this event.
