It is hard to reopen and realize an economic recovery without shunning the impacts of coronavirus.

But one Rhode Island leader seems to have the formula.

The reality is you cannot recover the economy with hundreds of new cases and hospitalizations each week. Getting more than 80% of the population vaccinated is the only formula to a healthy state and an economic recovery.

One Rhode Island leader has hired young people to hand out masks.

She personally has attended every vaccination clinic in her city.

Now, she is going door-to-door discussing the critical importance of vaccination.

Central Falls' Mayor Maria Rivera is a standout in Rhode Island and across the country for fighting coronavirus.

She has not asked for a stage for press conferences, she hasn't scheduled Zooms to tout her efforts. It is one-on-one, knocking on doors of residents, reaching out to the old and the infirmed.

Rivera is the Mayor of the poorest city in the state. Folks in Central Falls — one of the hardest-hit communities during the pandemic —have an annual median household of income is just $32,000.

The city is over 80% minority and the housing is old and dense.

Rivera has only been mayor for three-plus months, but she is taking education and personal contact to the city's 20,000 plus residents — in addition, there are thousands more who are undocumented.

It makes no difference to the new Mayor. As she told GoLocal last week, "I cannot wait to get our residents vaccinated. I need to get people healthy," said Rivera.

Hitting the streets with former Rhode Island Director of Health Mike Fine convincing those who are reluctant is not just talking the talk.

Rivera is walking the walk.

Kudos to the new Mayor who is showing the way.
