7 Major Coronavirus Developments — RI Ranks Poorly for Social Distancing — April 12
Sunday, April 12, 2020
Last week, Governor Gina Raimondo said that data she received showed Rhode Islanders were doing a good job with social distancing, but the tracking data from Unacast show Rhode Islanders doing a poor job adhering to restrictions.
Unacast is a company specializing in the analysis of “human mobility data,” which has developed a Social Distancing Scoreboard that measures average distance traveled as well as “nonessential visits” to venues.
On Sunday’s score — data is functionally 48 hours old— Rhode Island scored a grade of D+.

Unacast says, “To account for natural dispersion, our third metric is change in the number of potential human encounters. Since our data can’t tell if two humans actually met, we’re defining “potential encounters” as the probability that two devices that were in the same place at the same time.”
Rhode Island’s D+ score is tied with Connecticut for the lowest grade in New England.
On Saturday, Raimondo said that Rhode Island had "two things" working against it in the fight against coronavirus -- being the most densely populated state and having a high percentage of seniors.
