Monday, February 24, 2014
In GoLocal's 2014 ranking of the Most Dangerous Intersections in New England, Massachusetts' most dangerous intersection ranks #3 overall. How do Massachusetts' most dangerous stretches of road compare to each other?
Both urban and rural areas were represented on the list, with the area at Worcester's Mill and Main Street intersection landing on the list for a high number of accidents -- including one fatality -- during recent years. Curious about how other areas in the state stacked up? "We have a report that is done each year with the top crash locations in the state," said Sara Lavoie with the MA Department of Transportation.

A community can bring a project of interest to the Metropolitan Planning Organization of that region and work through the Regional Planning Agency and the MassDOT District office to see if the project can get onto the STIP funded with HSIP," said Lavoie, noting that the project would have to be eligible for HSIP funding based on data to show it is the top 5% location within the region.
Lavoie continued, "MassDOT frequently works with the regional planning agencies to conduct Road Safety Audits (RSA) at these locations. A RSA is a multi-disciplined review of a location to identify safety concerns and possible short and long term solutions. The short term solutions may then be implemented by the entity with jurisdiction over the location and the long term solutions may be programmed using HSIP funds.
