The “Sailor’s Daughter” Opens Up Shop in Newport

There’s a new boutique in Newport - “inspired by New England coastal living.”
The Sailor’s Daughter recently opened on 408 Thames Street, and GoLocal spoke with owner Jill Zelensky about the business.
Describing it as a “locally-owned coastal boutique inspired by ocean air, seaside charm, and effortless New England style,” the shop features women’s clothing, accessories, and home decor.
New Rhode Island Roots
For Zelensky - a New Hampshire native who’s lived in Rhode Island for “ten years, six of those down in Newport,” she saw an opportunity she couldn’t pass up.
A former hotel revenue manager at Castle Hill Inn, Zelensky had thought about doing a travel blog, but the “small business community” lured her to downtown.
And Newport’s sailing heritage was a no-brainer for the theme of the boutique.
“I knew I wanted to open a women’s boutique, so I was like, ‘Sailor’s Daughter’ - what would her life look like? She lives by the ocean, she grew up here - what would her clothing look like, her home decor? It has a very romantic feel and vibe,” said Zelensky.
The brick-and-mortar store also features an online shopping component, where shoppers can find such Newport-themed items as an “iconic sailboat knit cardigan,” mini knot-stud earrings, lobster gingham embroidered keychains, and more.
