RI’s #2 School: Narragansett High School
Monday, May 09, 2011
Challenging East Greenwich High School for first place in 2011, Narragansett High moved up from the 3rd slot last year with consistently high testing averages across all platforms. The secret: a dedication 10 years ago to tightening expectations and accountability on all factors contributing to testing, including adjusting curriculum to support the requirements of NECAPs plus an advisory system built to support students academically.
It's paying off. Daniel F. Warner, Narragansett High's principal, has overseen the process since 2005, which has received the Regents Commended School Award for three years running, for posting gains in NECAP scores. Warner himself was lauded in 2009, being named RI Principal of the Year.
Where else did Narragansett High shine? Two significant spots: its 8:1 student-teacher ratio was the best of all the RI high schools in the Top 10 for 2011, and the school also had the highest spending per student, at $17,982. These hallmarks of attention to student resources gave NHS a solid 2nd place standing.
