MUSIC: Vudu Sister Releases Household Items at Columbus Theatre
Tuesday, May 07, 2013
On Saturday at The Columbus Theatre, the legendary center for music, film & the arts in the west end of Providence, Vudu Sister unveiled its second album Household Items to the masses and it promised to be one hell of a show. Divey, Brian Webb and The Silks filled out a bill that encompassed a plethora of awesome music to soothe the ears. It's always a treat to see a show at The Columbus, and this night was no exception.
Divey
A really cool duo featuring Vudu Sister's Alex Garzone and The Passionate Mammals' Noah Chevalier, Divey showcases the brilliance of combining polar musical opposites to create something truly special. "Little Lover", "Maniac Zero", "Suicidal Girlfriend", "Alien In The Basement", "Faded Dailies" and "Give Me A Pill" exuded spellbinding audio effects coming from Noah's electric guitar and keyboard while Alex's soulful and heartfelt voice melded nicely with the strumming of his six-string. Divey has just started working on their first recordings that hopefully will form into an EP or a full album sometime soon, be on the lookout for it and prime up your ears for a brand new sound.
Brian Webb
Last time I saw Brian Webb perform it was with a cigar box guitar at a benefit for Amos House, jam packed with Rhode Island musicians performing Tom Waits songs to celebrate Tom's induction into the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame in 2011 at The 201 when it was open on Westminster Street. Since that magnificent night I've been a huge fan of his so I was very excited to see what he brought to the stage. This time around he was performing as part of a trio and they rocked the joint with "Changed", "Down Home", "Wide Eyed", "45", "Minnesota", "Love Come Quick" and "Come On". You can always catch Brian playing around Rhode Island, make sure you see him next time he plays your local watering hole and try to keep your jaw from dropping.

When you talk about kickass blues bands in Rhode Island, it's a no-brainer to mention The Silks. This trio always brings the party and they created a buzz with "Turn Me On", "Going Down", "Home Again", an epic rendition of Neil Young's "Powderfinger" with Vudu Sister's Keith McCurdy, Alex Garzone and Damien Puerini joining the fray, "Gravedigger Blues" featuring Bryan Minto on harmonica, an emphatic version of The Rolling Stones' "Can't You Hear Me Knockin'", "Take It Easy" and "Down At The Heel" that had people clappin', hollarin' and nearly jumping out of their seats. It seems like it's been ages since The Silks started working on their debut album and it has yet to be imported into my ever-growing music library. After you see them live, you just want to take The Silks home and listen to their blues all day so let's hope that album comes out soon so we can all bask in the greatness.
Vudu Sister
After a little intermission with people grabbing beers & hot dogs along with smoking the occasional cigarette, you could hear one riff resonate through the walls and it was that sound. You know, that sound that makes your flesh crawl, your ears tremble and your toes curl. That sound my friends is rock & roll and Vudu Sister became the epitome of it, starting it off with an eerie cover of PJ Harvey's "To Bring You My Love". The quartet consisting of Keith McCurdy on vocals and rhythm guitar, his father Chris on bass, Garzone on drums and Damien Puerini on lead guitar then went right into it with "Sober Driver", "Kid Heroine", "Household Items", "Got No Time", "Dead Man's Pockets", "One Of A Kind", "Loverboy", "Revival" "Daisies" and "Buffalo, NY" featuring Amato Zinno on cello and a crazy hyper jammed out version of "A Farmer's Life" with Bryan Minto joining in on harmonica that was an explosion of musical brilliance. Minto is the only guy I've ever seen get psychedelic on an harmonica and it was the cherry on top to a wonderful rhythmic sundae. After the initial performance Minto asked the audience, "You want Keith to play one more song?", of course the crowd obliged and Vudu Sister didn't disappoint with a cover of Joe Fletcher & The Wrong Reasons "I Never" with Joe Principe on bass to end a great night of spectacular music. You gotta get Vudu Sister's Household Items, it's better than what they play on the radio in your car's stereo and it's better than what you're listening to on your computer right now. Once you get the new album, log on to www.columbustheatre.com to check out what's happening next at a music venue that's so beautiful it's purely a palace filled with wonder.
