Halsey went viral in 2018

Rhode Island Mary Halsey showed us in 2018 that we can all be famous, in our own right. 

It's not every day a karaoke video gets you over 13 million views (as of the end of December) but Mary Halsey's rendition of Missy Elliott's "Work It" went viral in August, and caught the attention of such celebrities as Snoop Dogg, and Elliott herself.   

Halsey was invited to appear with Ellen DeGeneres on "Ellen” — and was joined by Elliott herself, who gave Halsey a "funky white sister" tee, which is what Halsey dubbed herself on the original karaoke video.

Then, DeGeneres, who liked Halsey so much, flew her out to Los Angeles to cover the American Music Awards  as a correspondent for her show.

The national press went wild for Halsey, with even USA Today penning “5 things to know about the viral 'funky white sister' who covers Missy Elliott's 'Work It'However, Rhode Islanders aiready knew it had a hometown legend.  Halsey showed us if you’re passionate, work hard at your craft, and believe in yourself — anyone can be a star.
