Newsies is in town this weekend

There is plenty going on around the state of Rhode Island to keep you busy over the weekend. From festivals to concerts and much more, there are events for all ages. 

This weekend’s events include Newsies at the James & Gloria Maron Cultural Arts Center, the 31st Apple Festival, Downton Abbey Fox Hunt and more.

Newsies at James and Gloria Maron Cultural Arts Center

Newsies is the rousing tale of Jack Kelly, a charismatic newsboy, and leader of a ragged band of teenaged newsies, who dreams only of a better life far from the hardship of the streets.

But when publishing titans Joseph Pulitzer and William Randolph Hearst raise distribution prices at the newsboys expense, Jack finds a cause to fight for and rallies newsies from across the city to strike for whats right. 

The show goes from 7 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.

Wellred Comedy Tour at Comedy Connection 

Stand-up comedy and writing partners, Trae Crowder (The Liberal Redneck), Drew Morgan and Corey Ryan Forrester are touring nationally in support of their best-selling book, Liberal Redneck Manifesto: Draggin Dixie Outta the Dark.

They have appeared on Nightline (ABC), Real Time with Bill Maher (HBO), Evening News with Don Lemon (CNN), Last Word with Lawrence O'Donnell (MSNBC) and WTF with Marc Maron.

9th Annual Woony River Ride Bike-A-Thon at Waterplace Park 

The Woonasquatucket River Watershed Council is hosting its 9th annual Woony River Ride Bike-a-Thon. On September 15th, bikers can choose to ride 60, 45, 30, 10 bike routes, and a 5-mile bike and walking route. 

The Woony Ride brings out family, friend, and co-worker cyclists from all over the region to enjoy the splendor of the Woonasquatucket River. It's a fully supported ride, and it ends with an after-party at Waterplace Park in Downtown Providence--live music, food, and awesome prizes for fundraisers. 

The event goes from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Downton Abbey Fox Hunt and Luncheon at Chase Farm Park

Learn about the traditions of an English fox hunt and then watch the action, with majestic horses and specially-trained hounds bounding across the landscape in pursuit of the fox. 

Except that there are no real foxes! 

It will only be the scent of a fox that they will follow.

The event goes from 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Hurricane of 1938 80th Anniversary Walking Tour 

On Saturday, Sept. 15, starting at 11am (departing from the Al Forno parking lot), this walking tour will examine how a disastrous hurricane took most New Englanders by surprise. While the storm ravaged the region, we’ll focus on the stories of downtown Providence and its architecture, sharing unique stories of people who were in the city when the storm hit. 

The walk will also touch on what was happening nationally and globally in 1938, as well as what would come afterward. Our staff has discovered truly remarkable stories that happened in Providence during the Hurricane of 1938.
