Selling Rhode Island, and specifically the Providence-metro area, can be exhilarating and equally challenging.

Tourism is one of the largest employers in the state and drives billions in revenue.

But momentum can sometimes be as difficult as grabbing the water out of Narragansett Bay.

For every architectural historic marvel like Benefit Street, there is a downtrodden Kennedy Plaza.

And, when great news happens — the successful launch of the Track 15 food hall for instance — the Providence Place Mall goes into receivership.

Since 2019, Kristen Adamo has served as the CEO and President of the Providence and Warwick Convention and Visitors Bureau (PWCVB).

During her tenure in the leadership position, she has suffered through the devastation of COVID and too often failed political leadership.

Adamo has been a near non-stop innovator in creating more events to bolster the Rhode Island experience for natives and to drive visitors into the region.

She and her team have created winter events in Providence.

The new comedy and food festivals in the spring transformed downtime into a hub of visitors and fun.

Adamo has been a whirlwind of innovation.

Rhode Island’s tourism numbers were up in 2025 and that was during a year in which Rhode Island Commerce changed leadership three times and did not have a marketing director much of the year.

It didn’t happen there; it happened with Adamo’s group.

This summer, the world is coming to Foxboro for the World Cup, and Providence will be a hub. Tens of thousands of visitors will be coming to stay at Providence and Warwick hotels and eat at area restaurants.

Adamo has been a star in Rhode Island and deserves recognition for her innovation and leadership. As she once told GoLocal, “Refreshingly, [PWCVB is] an organization that receives no direct funding from the state or either city. We’re like a Rhode Island unicorn.”

The funding source to support the organization comes from a portion of user fees at restaurants and hotels, Adamo and her team are driven by success.

For all these reasons, GoLocal selects Kristen Adamo for her innovation and steady leadership as the Rhode Island woman of the year.
