5 Story Apartment and Retail Complex Proposed on East Side, Monahan Funeral Home to Be Demolished
Monday, July 05, 2021
In May, GoLocal first reported that Monahan Drabble Sherman Funeral Home on the East Side of Providence, which has handled the funeral arrangements of many of Rhode Island’s most wealthy and influential over the decades, was sold to a developer.
The history of the funeral home goes back over 140 years. The Victorian home on the corner of Waterman Street and Wayland Avenue will be demolished as part of the development plan.
Now, developer Steve Lewinstein has submitted plans to the City of Providence to demolish the funeral home and build a significant five-story residential and retail structure.GET THE LATEST BREAKING NEWS HERE -- SIGN UP FOR GOLOCAL FREE DAILY EBLAST
The proposed development will consume the space that Monahan’s occupied as well as the adjacent parking area.
Efforts to reach Steve Lewinstein, the developer proposing the project and who owns many of the commercial buildings in the Wayland Square area, were unsuccessful.
The project is slated for 62,000 square and includes 38 residential units and two large retail spaces.

The units proposed are seven one-bedroom, eight one-bedroom plus den, and 23 two-bedroom units.
The building's height is approximately ten feet taller than the building across Waterman that houses Mare rooftop restaurant and bar.
This is just the latest effort in the Wayland Square area. GoLocal’s architecture critic Will Morgan has written about some of the additions in the area. Read Here.
The City Plan Commission is holding a Virtual Meeting on Tuesday, July 20, 2021 at 4:45 p.m. to consider the proposal.
