URI Standout and Worcester Native Ty Sterner Drafted by Cincinnati Reds
Sunday, June 08, 2014
University of Rhode Island pitcher and Worcester, Mass. native Ty Sterner was selected in the 23rd round of the 2014 MLB Draft by the Cincinnati Reds.
Sterner, a junior left-hander, moved into the starting rotation this season following 2 years in the bullpen for the Rams. He posted a 5.43 ERA in 14 games for URI.
While URI struggled to a 13-40 record as a team this season, Sterner has the benefit of being a southpaw in a sport where talented lefties are invaluable.

With 1 year of college eligibility remaining, Sterner can choose to stay at URI for another year if he and the Reds cannot agree to a contract.
