PC Holds Off Texas 71-65 to Close Non-Conference Schedule

Alpha Diallo leads PC to a win over Texas
The Providence College Friars closed out their non-conference schedule with a 71-65 win over the University of Texas on Friday night in Austin, Texas.

It is Providence’s first-ever win at Texas and the first win over the Longhorns since 1996.

“Great team win for us tonight. Proud of the guys. Makai’s three was the shot of the game,” said PC head coach Ed Cooley after the game.

The win improves the Friars to 10-3 overall, while the Longhorns drop to 7-4 overall.

PC opens up Big East play on New Years’ Eve when they host Creighton at the Dunkin’ Donuts Center.

Friars Hold Off Texas

After leading by as much as ten points early in the second half, Providence saw their lead cut to one, 51-50, with 11:53 to play in the game after Texas’ Matt Coleman knocked down a corner three.

From that point, the Friars went on a 9-2 run capped off by a Makai Ashton-Langford three to take a 60-52 lead with 6:25 to play.

Ashton-Langford saw significant action in the game, especially in the second half, after David Duke got in early foul trouble.

He finished with five points and four rebounds.

The Longhorns would get back within two, 64-62 with 2:11 to play in the game before the Friars would score five straight points, three of which came on free throws from Alpha Diallo, to take a 69-62 lead.

Diallo would add two more free throws in the final seconds to seal PC’s 71-65 win.

Diallo led the Friars with 20 points on 5 of 10 shooting from the field. He also grabbed six rebounds.

Isaiah Jackson added 12 points off the bench.

Next Up 

The Friars return to action on New Year's Eve when they host Creighton in the first game of Big East play.
