A GoLocal investigation this summer into City Council President Michael Solomon's ethics filings, which lead to a filing of a complaint, has resulted in a $2000 fine to failed Mayoral hopeful Solomon.

On Tuesday, the Rhode Island Ethics Commission ordered Solomon to pay a civil penalty of $2000 for "failing to make required disclosures on 2008-2013 financial statements with the commission, in violation of state law."

Former Providence City Council Candidate and Cranston Police officer Michael Long had filed the complaint during the campaign.  On August 7, Long alleged that Solomon committed 25 separation ethics violations and "has displayed gross negligence in failing to to meet the reporting requirements of the [Ethics Commission]."

"I think $2000 is laughable," said Long on Tuesday.  "I'm not going to undermine the Ethics Commission and what they feel is a good settlement  But when [Solomon] owed the city half a million dollars and his fine is iota of that, it's laughable."

"Clearly, the Ethics Commission isn't trying to install a deterrent with such a low fine," said Long.  "Aspiring politicians or people elected to office aren't going to be deterred from misfiling their ethics forms by such a fine."

Findings On Tuesday November 18, the Commission ruled that Solomon failed to disclose his position in New City Conrad, LLC -- which was making mortgage payments to the Providence Economic Development Partnership (PEDP).

Additionally, the ethics commission found Solomon failed to disclose indebtedness to Washington Trust for another mortgage.
