The Cranston Republican City Committee yesterday expressed outrage over Cranston Councilman Terence Livingston's proposal to grant city council members a 100 percent raise in salary.

The proposal would raise council members' salaries from $4,000 to $8,000.

"For the recently-repudiated, all-Democratic City Council to double their own compensation while Mayor (Allan)Fung is trying to cut costs and taxpayers are suffering under double-digit unemployment is just plain despicable," said Republican Chairman Bruce Saccoccio.

Fung also condemned the raises in similar terms. “I wholeheartedly support the GOP’s position regarding pay raises for the City Council, Fung said. “At a time when all employees have sacrificed in one way or another and taxpayers are struggling to pay bills and facing high unemployment, it is unconscionable that the city council would consider any raise, let alone a 100 percent increase.”

A similar measure by the Cranston City Council to increase its pay by 33 percent in 1983, was denied by a Superior Court judge who ruled that the re-elected councilmen who voted for the pay raise were in violation of the law, according to Saccoccio. He said the city GOP will file ethics complaints against each of the returning council members who voted in favor of the raise.

The proposed raise will come up for a hearing tomorrow night.
