Red lips are as old as time and always a classic look, bucking trends and becoming its own phenomenon. Wearing red lips says "I'm here, I'm fabulous, I'm chic!" all at once without saying a word. But how do you find the perfect red? We have a few tricks and tips as well as some product favorites for your very own hot lips.

Makeup artist extraordinaire Kristin Greene, who is responsible for many gorgeous Rhode Island brides, recommends using your hair and skin tone as a guide. "Finding the perfect red is hard to do but if you look at your skin tone and hair color, you can find your match."  We also want to note that when it comes to flaunting red lips, eye makeup should be minimal so the focus is on the red. Simple black liner and mascara is all that's required with a touch of blush to the cheeks.

Tone Up

Fair skinned redheads or anyone with orange tones in their hair should go with an orange red.  Add power to your pucker with Stila's Shine Lip Color SPF20 in Pam, a glossy cream color that lasts all day ($22, Facing Thayer).

Darker hair or darker complexions can go with a blue red to get in on the classic look. Sass up your smile with Julie Hewitt's Femme Noir Matte, a gorgeous blue red that just sings sexy ($22.50, The Apothecary Newport).

Opaque Optional

You may be hesitant to rock a red lip, as many of us are, for fear of getting it wrong and looking like Mimi from the Drew Carey Show. For those who are "lip shy" have no fear, you can rock a gloss or stain to glam it up sans risk. We love Christian Dior Dior Addict Ultra Gloss in Little Red Dress ($26.50, Sephora, Providence Place), plumping and shining from morning to night and that. Another GoLocalProv pick is Sunrise Lip Gloss from Ava Anderson Non-Toxic Cosmetics ($8.95) which adds a hint of hue to your lips, a true sailor's delight!

A Lovely Bouquet

If raging red is just not your thing, you can still take a bite of the apple with lip color that falls into merlot, burgundy or maroon. Greene's personal favorite is MAC's "O" ($14.50, Nordstrom, Providence Place), a lipstick that is a burgundy with gold flecks. "This color works on everyone and you can switch up the look with liners and glosses to keep it fresh," she says.
