URI Soccer to Face Syracuse in First Round of NCAA Tournament Thursday

The University of Rhode Island men’s soccer team will face the Syracuse Orange in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.

Rhode Island clinched an automatic bid to the tournament by winning the A10 championship on Sunday, beating Dayton 1-0.

The win gave URI one of 24 automatic bids for the NCAA Championship.

The game against Syracuse will take place on Thursday, November 21 in New York.

Thursday’s game will be the first-ever meeting between the two schools in soccer.

Rhode Island head coach Gareth Elliott faced the Orange twice while at Siena, going 2-0 against Syracuse.

The URI-Syracuse winner will play at St. John's in the second round.

URI Soccer in NCAA Tournament

Rhode Island is making its second straight trip to the NCAA Tournament.

Last season, the Rams played at Connecticut in the opening round, falling 4-3 in overtime.

Rhode Island's best run in the NCAA Championship came in 2000, when it rallied to beat Georgia State 4-3 in overtime in a play-in game, then beat Boston College in the first round.

URI was eliminated by North Carolina, 3-1 in the second round.

Overall, the Rams are 5-11-2 in previous NCAA Tournament appearances.
