Tuesday, September 13, 2016
Classical High School golf star, Patrick Welch, is the first Rhode Islander ever to qualify for the US Junior Ryder Cup team that will take on the Junior team from Europe starting September 26 in Minnesota.
On September 20, however, Welch will be at The Wolf School golf outing at Wannamoisett Country Club hosting a one hour golf clinic for students, and hitting tee shots for tournament participants.

“My brother is my best friend, he's like my hero. I love that kid so much, and I would do anything for him. I would do anything for that school,” Welch said, getting emotional.
The Wolf School in East Providence works with students who have trouble progressing in traditional classrooms due to complex learning profiles, including sensory, verbal, and social difficulties.
"The Wolf School has been incredible for Jack, but it has been incredible for our entire family as well,” said Marty Welch, father or Patrick and Jack.
Patrick leaves for the Junior Ryder Cup two days later.
2016 Junior Ryder Cup
Taking place at Interlachen Country Club in Minnesota, the 2016 Junior Ryder Cup kicks off with opening ceremonies on September 25, before play begins on September 26.
“It’s been exciting, every day is one day closer to the Ryder Cup. I have to practice for it, but I know all the players on the team,” said Welch.
Team USA has won 4 straight Junior Ryder Cups.
Welch secured his spot on the team after a runner-up finish in the Junior PGA Championship, which was held at Wannamoiset Country Club in early August.
Patrick Welch and The Game of Golf
Welch says he picked up the game from his dad “around age 2 or 3.”
In 2014, he won the inaugural Drive, Chip, and Putt Championship at Augusta National Golf Club.
“That was an experience of a lifetime. Just being down there was amazing, winning it was a bonus,” said Welch.
He also advanced to the round of 64 at the U.S. Junior Amateur, and missed qualifying for the US Amateur by just one shot.
On Saturday, Patrick will be recognized for his achievements by Classical High School during half time of the school’s football game against Mt. Hope High School. Game time is at 12 p.m.
Marty Welch adds, “Patrick is all of our heroes, especially Jack”
