Lincoln Wins Second Straight DI Fast Pitch Softball Title
Tuesday, June 18, 2013
Lincoln Lions defeated Coventry on Sunday afternoon at Rhode Island College by a score of 5-1 to win its second straight Division I softball state championship.
Lincoln was led offensively on Sunday by Casie Beauchemin and Adriana Toro. Beauchemin put together a 2-for-3 day out of the lead off spot for the Lions, while Toro was Lincoln's main run producer, driving in two out of the five lions' runs, scoring twice, and collecting two hits, one of which was a triple.
Mayer Shines Again
Lindsay Mayer, Lincoln's senior right-handed pitcher and two-time RI Gatorade Softball Player of the Year, led her team to yet another state title. The University of Virginia bound Mayer threw a complete game, allowing just one run on three hits, while striking out four batters in a winning effort.
Mayer is coming off a regular season stat line that is one of the best that this state has seen in a long time, compiling a regular season record of 15-0 with a 0.82 earned run average, while striking out 150 hitters in 103 innings pitched.
With the victory, Lincoln completed its second straight undefeated season, as Mayer led her team to a state title in her junior season as the best player in the state a season ago. The Lions have now won 43 straight games dating back to last year, registering a perfect 43-0 record over the past two seasons.
