Forward Emmitt Holt poured in 17 points and grabbed 13 rebounds to lead the Providence College Friars to an 87-68 win over Stonehill College in an exhibition game on Saturday afternoon at the Dunkin’ Donuts Center.

Holt is entering his sixth season of eligibility with the Friars after sitting out all of the 2017-18 campaign, and the majority of the 2018-19 campaign due too health issues.

“It was a surreal moment for me, just sitting out for so long, the past two years. I was really antsy to get out there, but I didn’t want to do too much. Just keep the game as simple as possible,” said Holt after the game.

Holt played a total of 29 minutes in the contest and along with a double-double, added two assists, two blocked shots and two steals.

“Before the game, we tried to reverse the clock a little bit to September 8, 2017, when Emmitt got sick and he sat that year out, he sat another year out and we tried to bring him back to early. Father Time healed him, glad that he played really well today,” said PC head coach Ed Cooley after the game.

Friars Cruise Past Stone Hill

The Friars led 8-4 with 16 minutes left in the first half after sophomore AJ Reeves converted a layup.

From that point, the Friars went on a 17-5 run capped off by a David Duke dunk to put PC up 25-9 with 10:40 left in the half.

Providence would extend the lead to as much as 20 points, 40-20, with 3:24 left in the half on a corner three by Holt, before taking a 46-31 lead into the break.

In the second half, Stonehill would cut PC’s lead to as little as six points, 48-42, on a three by Brandon Twitty with 16:35 left to play in the game.

"I thought we came off the gas too many times when we got up. I think we got very content and if you're going to be a championship-caliber program you can't be content, you have to stay hungry," said Cooley.

That is as close as Stonehill would get.

Providence would get a three from Reeves and a foul and one from Duke to push the lead back up to 54-42 with 15 minutes to play in the game.

Holt would then convert two free throws to push the Friars lead to 14 points.

Stonehill would not get closer than 12 points the rest of the way.

Overall, the Friars were led by Diallo, who poured in 23 points and grabbed seven rebounds.

Duke added 16 points and six assists, while Reeves added 11 points in the game.

Regular Season Begins

The Friars return to action on Tuesday, November 5 when they host Sacred Heart in the regular-season opener at the Dunkin’ Donuts Center.

Game time is set for 7 p.m.
