Brown Falls to Yale 70-56 in Ivy League Opener

The Brown Bears men’s basketball team lost its Ivy League opener to the Yale Bulldogs 70-56 on Friday night in New Haven, Connecticut.

Brown was led by Tamenang Choh, who netted 18 points, however, Brown’s other four starters combined for three points through the first 33 minutes and nine points for the game.

Brown super-sophomore Jaylan Gainey came into the game early and scored 11 points, grabbed eight rebounds and intimidated the Bulldogs with five blocked shots for the Bears.

"I thought Yale did a good job defending us for most of the game and when we got open shots, they didn't fall. Our offense will have to be a lot better next Friday night. We will learn from tonight and are looking forward to the opportunity against Yale next week,” said Brown head coach Mike Martin after the game.

Brown falls to 7-7 overall and 0-1 in the Ivy League.

Yale improves to 12-4 overall and 1-0 in the Ivy League.

After trailing by as much as 23-11 in the first half, Brown stormed back to take a 24-23 lead on a three by freshman Dan Friday with 2:06 left in the half.

The Bulldogs pulled back ahead 31-26 before Brown cut the Bulldogs lead to three, 31-28, at the half.

In the second half, it was all Yale from the start.

The Bulldogs opened the frame on a 21-9 run to take a 52-37 lead with 11:42 to play.

The Bears got within seven, 61-54, with 1:47 to play on a jump shot by Brandon Anderson.

However, the Bears would not get any closer as the Bulldogs would go onto the win.

Anderson finished the game with just six points on 2-of-10 shooting from the field, and 0-4 from three.

Next Up

Brown returns to action on Friday, January 24 when they host Yale at the Pizzitola Sports Center.

Game time is set for 7 p.m. and can be seen on ESPNU.
