After a disappointing opening-round loss to Creighton on Friday night 78-57, the Brown University men’s basketball team scored a late-game victory over Bradley University on Saturday.

Fueled by a three-pointer by Paxson Wojcik and three late free throws by Dan Friday, the Bears won 65-62 at the 2021 Paradise Jam played in the U.S. Virgin Islands.

Brown goes down as the first Ivy League team to ever beat Bradley in ten meetings.

"That was a physical, back-and-forth game against a well-coached opponent," head coach Mike Martin said. "Nothing came easy offensively, but I was really pleased with how our guys just grinded that one out. They made all kinds of big plays, big defensive stops. The block by Dan that led to Paxson's three was such a huge play.

"We have a ton of respect for Bradley and are really pleased we found a way to win that one."

Brown is now 4-2 on the season -- their losses are to Creighton and UNC.

GAME STORY

Brown led 56-50 with 7:30 remaining in the game, but the Braves would go on a 9-0 run to take the 59-56 lead at the 4:18 mark. When things could have taken a turn for the worse, Kino Lilly Jr. hit a three to tie things up. On the other end, Friday blocked a shot that led to Wojcik's three that retook the lead for good.

Friday would go on to hit a pair of free throws that made it a two-possession game. Bradley got a bucket and free throw of its own to cut it to 64-62, but one more from the line from Friday iced it.

On the game, Lilly Jr., Friday, and David Mitchell all paced Brown with 11 points. Tamenang Choh had 10 in his return to the starting lineup. Choh and Jaylan Gainey each had a team-high eight rebounds.

The two sides traded baskets for the first 14 minutes of the game as neither team led by more than five and things were tied at 20 with 6:15 to play in the first half. A 13-4 run by the Bears over the next five minutes stretched the lead to 33-24. A jumper by Bradley in the final minute of the half put things at 33-26 headed into the break.

The Braves opened the second half with some firepower they didn't show in the first and had the game tied at 40 six minutes in. The game was tied again at 50 and, after Lilly Jr.'s three, at 59. From there, Wojcik and Friday sealed the deal.

NEXT GAME

The Bears will play one final game at the Paradise Jam on Monday, Nov. 22 at 3:15 p.m. EST against the winner of Colorado and Duquesne.
