Big Second Half Lifts Dartmouth Over Brown 44-21

 Junior quarterback Dylan Williams threw three touchdowns and racked up 358 yards of total offense to lift the Big Green to a 44-21 Ivy League win over Brown at Memorial Field. The loss drops Brown to 4-5 overall, 2-4 in the Ivy League, while Dartmouth keeps its Ivy title hopes alive with a 5-1 Ivy mark, 7-2 overall.

“We just had a big dose of Williams,” said Brown head coach Phil Estes.  “He can beat you with his arm and feet and he really beat us today with his running ability.”

The Bears had the better of play at the outset of the game and led 14-7 early in the second quarter, following a touchdown reception by senior Brian Strachan (Wellesley, MA). Dartmouth and Williams took over the game, outscoring the Bears 37-0 over the next 37 minutes to put the game away, 44-14, with eight minutes remaining.

A late Brown touchdown, an 18-yard pass from sophomore quarterback Kyle Moreno (Pleasanton, CA) to junior wide receiver Troy Doles (Saratoga, CA), accounted for the final score.

“Dartmouth is a really good football team, who can beat anyone on their schedule,” added Estes. “They have a big offensive line, and I thought at times that I could have run behind them.”

Bears’ senior quarterback Marcus Fuller (Ashland, OH) passed for 165 yards, but was consistently put on his back by the Big Green defense, and left the game early in the fourth quarter.  He completed 16-of-28 passes overall.

“We had to get Fuller out of the game after taking too many hits,” said Estes. “We have to do a better job of protecting him.”

On the receiving end, Strachan and senior wide receiver Reiley Higgins (Coto de Caza, CA) each caught five passes.

Senior linebacker Dan Giovacchini (Acton, MA) led the Brown defensive effort with 11 total tackles, including a quarterback sack.  Sophomore corner back Jordan Ferguson (Ladera Heights, CA) was busy in the secondary and made 12 tackles, including nine solo hits.

Brown’s defense, though, was unable to contain Williams, who passes for 248 yards, completing 25-of-33 passes, yards while rushing for another 100 yards.

Big Green wide receiver Ryan McManus made a career high 13 receptions for 154 yards and three touchdowns, while Ryder Stone rushed for a game high 114 yards, including a 63-yard touchdown run for Dartmouth’s final score.

Junior tailback Andrew Coke (Andover, MA) gave Brown a 7-0 lead with 8:08 to play in the opening quarter when his one-yard touchdown run capped a 75-yard, 14 play drive on its opening possession.

The Big Green tied the score, 7-7, on a 25-yard scoring pass from Williams to McManus with 2:54 remaining in the opening quarter.

Brown took the lead once again on the first play of the second quarter when Fuller connected on a 15 yard scoring strike to Strahan to complete a 62-yard scoring drive.

Dartmouth answered once again, this time a 10-yard Williams’ touchdown pass to McManus to knot the score, 14-14, at the 11:02 mark of the second quarter.

On the final play of the opening half, Big Green kicker Alex Gakenheimer booted a 30-yard field goal to lift the Big Green to a 17-14 advantage.

Following a Brown fumble, the Dartmouth connection of Williams to McManus struck again, this time a 4 yard scoring combination with 12:43 left in the third quarter to give the Big Green a 24-14 lead.

With Brown unable to mount any offensive attack in the third quarter, the Big Green couldn’t be stopped, building a 37-14 cushion with 2:02 left in the quarter. A 63-yard scoring run by Stone extended Dartmouth’s lead to 44-14.

Brown wraps-up its 2014 season on Saturday, November 22, hosting Columbia at Brown Stadium.  It’s Senior Day and the game will be televised live on Fox College Sports with kick-off at 12:30pm.
