RIC Taps Legendary Coach Pincince to Head Women’s Soccer Program

Rhode Island College has named Phil Pincince ’79 as its head women’s soccer coach. He will take over the program immediately following the conclusion of the 2021 season.
“I'm very excited about joining the RIC coaching staff and want to thank Athletic Director Don Tencher,” Pincince said. “I've known Don for a long time and appreciate all of his tireless efforts to move RIC athletics forward and support all student-athletes. I still have a passion to coach and teach and look forward to meeting the team after they complete their season. I've put together an outstanding coaching staff, which will be announced soon.”

Pincince amassed a record of 324-245-55 and won 12 Ivy League Championships.
Pincince graduated from Rhode Island College with a bachelor’s degree in health and physical education in 1979.
He played four seasons of men’s soccer as a forward at RIC from 1973 through 1976 and served as a team captain. He was a member of the 1973 men’s soccer team that was enshrined in RIC’s Athletic Hall of Fame in 2018. The Anchormen went 13-3-0, recording the best record in program history and securing a berth in the NAIA District 32 Playoffs.
In addition to his duties as head women’ soccer coach, Pincince also served as the head coach for the softball program from 1979 to 1992. He accumulated a career record of 270-183-1 with three Ivy League titles. The combined 594 wins in both soccer and softball make him the winningest coach in Brown Athletics history.
Following his tenure at Brown, Pincince returned to coaching, this time at Mount Saint Charles Academy where he has led the girls’ varsity soccer team since 2018. He guided the team to a Rhode Island Div. II State Championship in his first year at the helm during the 2018 campaign. It was the first-ever R.I. State title in program history.
He has served on multiple national committees, including the NCAA Women’s Soccer Championship Committee, NCAA Men’s and Women’s Soccer Rules Committee, the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) National Women’s Soccer All-America Committee and a multitude of committees at Brown.
Pincince has received a plethora of awards including the Rhode Island Words Unlimited High School Coach of the Year and Frank Lanning Awards, 2018 Rhode Island High School Coaches Association Coach of the Year Award, NSCAA Women’s National Coach of the Year Award and the NSCAA Regional Coach of the Year Award.
He has also been honored in several different athletic halls of Fame, including the Rhode Island College Athletic Hall of Fame, the New England Soccer Hall of Fame and the Brown Athletic Hall of Fame as a member of the 1984 women’s soccer team (the first women’s team selected for that prestigious honor.
He resides in Cumberland, R.I. with his wife Janet ’77. They have two children: Stephanie and Brian and two grandchildren.
