10 Reasons Why We Need the Bruins and Celtics to Make the Playoffs
Thursday, March 12, 2015
With all of Boston's recent success (nine championships since 2001) in their four major sports, would it really be that big of a deal if the Boston Bruins and Boston Celtics don't make the playoffs this season?
Yes.
It's been 14 straight years with at least one of Boston's major sport teams making the playoffs.

The Boston Red Sox are in the midst of Spring Training and seem to have a stacked roster with tons of depth. However, nothing is certain in Major League Baseball and no matter how good a team looks on paper, it doesn't always translate to a postseason bid (see: 2014 New York Yankees).
As it stands right now, the Bruins and Celtics are both vying for the #8 seed in their respective Eastern Conference playoffs.
The Bruins currently hold the "second wild card" spot and if the season were to end today, they would be opening the playoffs against their rival Montreal Canadiens. There's 16 games left in their season, including tonight's game in Boston against the Tampa Bay Lightning.
The B's have won five of six. They have to play the Lightning two more times after tonight and face the Pittsburgh Penguins (currently 5th seed) on Saturday. The Bruins will also play the Washington Capitals (7th in East) on Sunday, and again on April 9.
The Celtics right now are two games behind Charlotte for the 8th seed in the NBA's Eastern conference. They've won six of their last 10 including a big win against the Miami Heat, who they trail by 1.5 games. Following last night's huge win against the Memphis Grizzlies, the Celts face a seemingly easy Orlando Magic team on Friday before squaring off in a big game against the Indiana Pacers on Saturday. The Pacers currently hold the 7th seed in the East, 2.5 games ahead of the Celtics.
The Celtics have 20 games remaining on their schedule. Nine of those games are against East playoff teams (two games each against the Pacers, Milwaukee Bucks, Toronto Raptors and Cleveland Cavaliers) and one game against the Heat.
If the Bruins can hang on, or if the Celtics can get hot, the streak of straight seasons with at least one Boston sport team making the playoffs continues guaranteed.
