University of Virginia Political Science Chair Jennifer Lawless said it would be “tough to find someone stronger than U.S. Senator Kamala Harris” on the campaign trail, after Democratic presidential hopeful Joe Biden announced Harris as his pick for running mate on Tuesday.

Lawless appeared on GoLocal LIVE an hour after Biden’s decision was announced, ending months of speculation of who his choice would be.

“It’s a strong pick in terms of her credentials and qualifications, it’s a strong pick in terms of her style of leadership and how she’s willing to campaign, and it’s a strong pick in terms of mobilizing voters — especially people of color who are vital to the Democratic coalition,” said Lawless.

Lawless spoke to Harris’ political career in California — and why she believes Harris’ is battle-tested for the national stage.

"It demonstrates a willingness to play hard and fight hard," said Lawless of Harris' political record. "That means she will be willing to take on Donald Trump and Mike Pence in a way that is just second nature — and given the fact that Donald Trump likes the political game too, it’s great, because it’s something that’s maybe not Joe Biden’s strongest feature."

"The second reason that it really matters is it demonstrates that she’s able to play in these games — and win. She was won various races that she has sought after — not the Presidential nomination of course but she’s been in very competitive races in the past and she’s come out a winner," said Lawless.

"So on the political side of things, on the campaigning side of things, I think it’s tough to find somebody stronger than she is on the campaign trail," she added.
