RI's GOP National Committeeman refuses to answer questions about Trump

Steve Frias, the high profile GOP candidate running against Speaker Nicholas Mattiello in Cranston, refuses to answer the question of whether he will still vote for Donald Trump -- disavowing Trump's "live mic" comments aside.

Frias, who according to the national GOP web site is Rhode Island’s only National Committeeman, has had multiple answer to a fairly simple question.

The usually responsive Frias has failed to respond to a half dozen emails and calls regarding his position on Trump.

Frias has had a few positions:

1) Kasich

Prior to the Republican National Convention in Cleveland, Frias was supporting Ohio Governor John Kasich and, in fact, voted for him in the first ballot.

2) Nominee

In June after Trump secured the nomination, Frias became vague despite continuing his role as a national Republican leader:

“My focus is on the state house, and my focus is on this race,” said Frias.

Frias is not the first Republican candidate in Rhode Island to side-step the Trump question; former Democratic State Rep turned Republican Congressional candidate Karen MacBeth — who ultimately dropped out of the race — refused to weigh in on the controversial Presidential candidate.

As for Frias’ incumbent Democratic opponent?

“What I’ll say about Trump is I'm glad he's a Republican,” said Mattiello.

After New York businessman Donald Trump won the nomination, Frias told GoLocalProv.com in an email that he would "support the GOP nominee for President." He reiterated his support for Trump in a podcast taped on RINPR published on August 5, 2016.

3) Crickets

Last Friday, the Washington Post reported:

“Donald Trump bragged in vulgar terms about kissing, groping and trying to have sex with women during a 2005 conversation caught on a hot microphone, saying that “when you’re a star, they let you do it,” according to a video obtained by The Washington Post.

The video captures Trump talking with Billy Bush, then of “Access Hollywood,” on a bus with the show’s name written across the side. They were arriving on the set of “Days of Our Lives” to tape a segment about Trump’s cameo on the soap opera.”

Since the tape became public, numerous national leading Republicans have announced that they will no longer support Trump’s candidacy for President — these include U.S. Senators John McCain (R-AZ) and Kelly Ayotte (NH).

Since Saturday, Frias has refused to answer GoLocal questions about disavowing Trumps comments == or if he will continue to “support the Republican nominee.”
