NEW: Loughlin Raises Just $3,000 In Second Quarter
Thursday, July 14, 2011
When possible 1st Congressional District candidate John Loughlin returns from active duty in Iraq, he will find himself at a significant disadvantage when it comes to fundraising. While Congressman David Cicilline and Brendan Doherty pulled in over $300,000 from April through June, the Loughlin campaign raised just $3,000, according to spokesman Michael Napolitano.
“Please keep in mind that the Loughlin campaign was not actively fundraising during the last quarter,” Napolitano wrote in an e-mail to GoLocalProv. “The campaign raised $3000, and there is campaign debt of $5500. This quarter we began a direct mail campaign and are planning a fundraising event for the fall. Obviously, our fund raising activities will kick into high gear when John returns from Iraq.”
Loughlin lost a close race to Cicilline last fall and although he didn’t make a formal announcement before leaving for Iraq, is expected to mount another campaign for 2012 against the vulnerable incumbent.

Doherty, his potential GOP primary opponent, raised over $250,000 and loaned his campaign $50,000 in the second quarter. The former head of the Rhode Island State Police has also been lining up prominent local and national supporters, including former Governor Don Carcieri, in recent months.
Cicilline, who the National Republican Congressional Committee is targeting as one of the most at-risk Democrats in the House, reports raising almost $360,000 during the second quarter.
