“It is clear that Democrats – fearful of voter discontent - are systematically urging state lawmakers and state secretaries not to require voters to provide identification when voting,” campaign spokesman Michael Napolitano. “And, based on the letter Cicilline signed, he may not even be aware of what is actually in Rhode Island’s election laws.”

According to Napolitano, Rhode Island passed a voter ID bill to prevent voter fraud – experienced by lawmakers who made allegations of possible problems with ineligible voters in their own districts. The state is now required to provide voter ID’s free of charge. A non-photo ID is acceptable in 2012 but a photo ID will be required in 2014.

“The letter sent by Cicilline and others uses an example of a college student being unable to vote with a school issued ID, but under the new RI law that student would be able to use his/her student ID to vote,” Napolitano said. “David could have stopped the disinformation campaign after frightening our senior citizens over false Social Security information, or he could have stopped the false claims he made about Providence’s financial health, but he continues to work at duping the electorate. He has a clear pattern of using deceit to get votes, and giving ineligible voters access to the polls is just another form of deceit.”
