1.  What do you think is the biggest political issue this campaign season in Rhode Island?

The biggest political issue this campaign season in Rhode Island is still the economy. From job creation legislation to tax relief for businesses and retirees to attracting new business and tourism, the General Assembly has made progress, but much more needs to be done. Although there has been controversy surrounding unethical behavior, the release of the 38 Studios grand jury material (which I have called for the Attorney General to seek through the Courts) and the Rhode Works bridge toll legislation, the economy and jobs  remain the prime focus of this political season.

2.  What do we need to do to improve Rhode Island's economy?

In order to improve the economy, the state must continue to provide an attractive business climate through tax incentives and tax cuts for business. In addition, quality schools and education opportunities that focus on preparing the Rhode Island work force for the challenges of a high paying job that the state seeks to attract or retain. Lastly, ethics reform will hopefully be approved by the voters in the November election where they will have the opportunity to amend Rhode Island’s Constitution to extend the Ethics Commission’s jurisdiction over members of the General Assembly.

3. What is the greatest challenge facing Rhode Island as a state?

Rhode Island was once the envy of the nation during the Industrial Revolution. Manufacturing of that nature no longer has a dominate presence in Rhode Island. But new industries such as Biotech and computer science have begun to emerge in this state. The I-195 Relocation Project is a perfect opportunity to educate  or retain our workforce for the 21st century. Rhode Island must decide what industries we will concentrate on to build for our future. If this state decides what type of business and jobs we want to attract and prepares a workforce to meet those businesses’ needs and executes that plan, we will have solved our greatest challenge.

4.  Why are you running for office?

I run for public office because I feel that I can make a difference in Rhode Island’s future  as a member of the Rhode Island House of Representatives. I have been very fortunate to receive an education as a lawyer and I have learned a tremendous amount as a public corruption prosecutor and municipal solicitor. With those opportunities comes the responsibilities to give back to the state so others may have the opportunity to achieve success in life. For myself, I see public service  as a requirement of citizenship.

5.  Who is your inspiration?

President John F. Kennedy. I remember hearing of his death in second grade over the loud speaker. We were released from school and went home and my mother and a neighbor were crying. That experience created a memory of a lifetime. As I got older, I studied his life. He was an inspirational leader who has caused this nation to compare all future presidential candidates to his legacy.
