“Dangerously Hot Conditions”  - Heat Index to Hit 98 to 112 Degrees Coming to Rhode Island

The National Weather Service is warning that Wednesday through Saturday will be “Dangerously hot conditions with afternoon heat index values of 98 to 112 degrees expected Wednesday through Saturday afternoons."

“Currently, Thursday and Friday look to be the worst of the heat and humidity, but regardless, this will be a prolonged and dangerous heatwave,” according to the NWS.

The blistering heat is expected to start on Wednesday at about 10 am in the metro-Providence and is not expected to subside anytime, as Sunday is forecasted to be above 90 degrees.

The extended heat wave is expected to engulf the East Coast.

This is just the latest global heat wave.

 

Europe Sets New Heat Records and Is Linked to Thousands of Deaths

“An intense heatwave that scorched western Europe this week spread into central and eastern parts of the continent on Saturday, bringing record temperatures from Denmark to Switzerland and Germany. The extreme heat disrupted transport, strained hospitals and renewed concerns over the growing impact of climate change on Europe's increasingly frequent summer heatwaves,” reports France 24.

Temperatures hit record highs from Switzerland to the Czech RepublicGermany, and Denmark on Saturday, as a heat wave that baked western European countries this week moves to central and eastern parts of the continent

Le Monde reports, “More than 1,200 deaths (all causes included) were recorded in France on June 24, then over 1,400 daily deaths on June 25 and 26, compared to 900 to 1,000 deaths per day in April and May. Santé Publique France also observed a 40% increase in deaths at home, with a "more pronounced" rise in the regions of Ile-de-France, Nouvelle-Aquitaine, Brittany, Centre-Val de Loire, Normandy and Pays de la Loire.

The elderly have been hit hardest. While mortality affected all age groups, 85% of the deaths were among people aged 65 and over. 

The heat wave is moving across Europe to the East.
