Healey Claims Roberts Has ‘Second Job’
Friday, October 29, 2010
Independent candidate Bob Healey is raising questions about what he calls Lt. Governor Elizabeth Roberts’ “second job”—seizing on it as yet another example of why he believes her office should be eliminated.
According to her most recent filing with the state Ethics Commission, Roberts earned between $100,001 and $200,000 in 2009 as a director for Union Land & Management, based in Herndon, Virginia. Roberts has said the income she receives is earnings and not dividends.
That’s more than the income she said she earned as lieutenant governor, which was listed between $50,001 and $100,000.

Governor having a second job, but if the income is classified as earnings, then when is she doing this work?” Healey asked, adding, “Although I understand that some people in office need to be paid to be a public servant, I am at a loss when a person is earning $100,000 to $200,000 from another job really needs another $100,000 from the people of Rhode Island.”
Healey draws income from law firm, real estate
Healey’s own ethics filing shows that he too had many sources of income in 2009: between $25,001 and $50,000 from his law practice, between $50,001 and $100,000 from the sale of property he owned in Pawtucket, and between $100,001 and $200,000 from the sale of land he owned in Uruguay.
Healey has said he would not take a salary if elected. He owns more than a dozen properties in prime locations in Jose Ignacio, Uruguay and has said he would make his living by selling off that land if he is elected. He said he would suspend his law practice while in office.
Spokesman: Roberts does not work a ‘second job’
Roberts Campaign Manager Dan Meuse said Union Land & Management is a family business. He said Roberts’ work for the company is largely limited to her participation in quarterly board meetings, either in person or through a conference call. “The fact that Bob Healey is saying that it is affecting her job is inaccurate at best,” Meuse told GoLocalProv.
That led Healey to accuse Roberts of having a second “do-nothing” job—the first being the office of lieutenant governor, which he believes serves no useful purpose in state government. “Is one do-nothing job not enough or do you have to double dip?” Healey said.
