Democrat Speakman Wins Special Election for House District 68
Wednesday, March 06, 2019
June Speakman, the Democratic candidate for House District 68 issued the following statement in response to the results of the Special Election:
“I want to thank the voters of Bristol and Warren for believing in our campaign and for choosing me to be your new State Representative. I also want to thank all the volunteers who gave so much of their time to talk with voters about our values and our vision for this district and for Rhode Island.
"We began this campaign knowing that the values that Bristol and Warren voters care about need to be upheld. We deserve a government that is transparent and accountable to the people it serves. We know that we need to do more to address climate change and preserve the shoreline and waterways that make our communities special. We believe that all working families deserve to live in a safe and affordable home. We must prioritize our children's futures by fighting for more funding for our schools. We want to ensure that our senior citizens are able to age in place with dignity. And we want to protect women’s reproductive rights -- no matter what happens at the federal level.”

The special election was caused after Democrat Laufton Ascencao stepped aside rather than take the oath of office. He admitted to falsifying documents related to his campaign account.
The Libertarian Party of Rhode Island’s John Fennessy posted the following to Facebook, “Libertarian Billy Hunt came in 2nd place in a 4-way race for RI State Representative tonight, coming within a couple of hundred votes of beating the Democrat machine in one of the bluest States in the country. Proud as hell of Billy and this team tonight.
The Libertarian Party of Rhode Island isn't going anywhere, our resolve is strengthened and we've only just begun to take it to these Democrats that insist on doubling down on stupid year after year. If they think we're a thorn in their sides now, they ain't seen nothing yet!"
